One of the main themes in the Book is the sovereignty of God over all. Yet can we trust God in our suffering and hopelessness? Some of us are still recovering from the effects of the flood. This morning I met a teacher whose house was inundated with 3 feet of water. He is still recovering.

Ezekiel means God is strong in everything. Tonight we’d like to look at God’s covenant foretold. Ezekiel prophesied this 600 years before Christ’s birth.

What is a covenant? A covenant is actually a mutual agreement between 2 or more persons to do or to refrain from doing certain acts. In the Bible God is regard as a witness to this agreement. In the OT, 3 different covenants; an equal agreement between 2 human parties, a one sided disposition by a superior party, a covenant that is made where God’s self-imposed law is applied.

The covenants of God consists of:

  1. Edenic (Gen 3:15 )
  2. Noahic (Gen 9:9 )
  3. Abrahamic (Gen 15:18 )
  4. Sinaitic (Exodus 19:56 )
  5. Levitical (Num 25:12 ,13)
  6. Davidic (2 Sam 23:5 )

In Ezekial, God’s covenant is everlasting. All of God’s covenants aim at peace. Jeremiah 31:31-34 talks about the New Covenant. When we talk about the covenant of peace, in Philippian 4:7, the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds. As we look at God’s covenant, after 600 years God fulfilled it through Jesus Christ.

In Luke 1:30-33 , an angel appeared to Mary and told her that she will be with child and she is to name him Jesus. So we find that, there is this fulfillment of the covenant that God has made. The Davidic line is not broken through this covenant. In Ezekiel the covenant talks about peace (Shalom in Hebrew) which ensures a life of blessing. In the Sinaitic covenant laws and rules were given to the Israelites. In the Abarahamic coventant, the Israelites were given land to reside.

The fulfillment of the covenant of God can be seen throughout the Bible, Luke 1:30-33 , Ezekiel 37:26 , Luke 2:14 among some of the references. The covenant was foretold and fulfilled.

What is God telling us? He talks about unity (v17, v20). He also talks about cleansing; that they will no longer vile themselves with idols and sinful backsliding. God is also telling us about salvation and refuge.  In conclusion we find that there is a covenant. There will also be a revival and the number will be increased. All these took place while the people were in exile. They were in a foreign land and without hope and status. In such a situation God came to them and saved them. In v15 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel. It was not they were deserving or good that God came to them. Similary, while still in sin, the love of God came to us, that while we were yet sinners, God already came to us.

When the Israelites were still under judgment, they were taken to Babylon. God came and assured them that He will cleanse them. So as we come to the table tonight, this is what we will experience. This is the cleansing blood of the lamb.
